In November 2017, Monkhead co-founder Nico Pimparé directed a mixed French and Wolof adaptation of Julius Caesar at an international Hip-Hop festival in Senegal’s capital city, Dakar. He developed and staged the piece with Senegalese young adults from Guediawaye, one of Dakar’s most deprived neighbourhoods.

It was based on Victor Hugo’s translation, with parts then translated into Wolof by local participants. It included live rap and a site-specific element – actors representing ‘the crowd’ were dispersed through the festival’s mosh pit. The audience was exceptionally engaged and at times raucous, galvanised by the actors amongst them.

It was performed at Voice4Thought International Hip Hop festival as a response to political radicalisation in West Africa, and was supported by G Hip Hop and high profile Senegalese rapper Fou Malade of Y’en A Marre.
